NEW Programs For Behavioral Health

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have introduced new Behavioral Health Services, offering valuable opportunities to enhance patient care:

1. Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) Services

Medicare now covers two BHI service types:

  • Psychiatric Collaborative Care Model (CoCM)
    Enhance primary care with care management and psychiatric consultations.
    Use CPT codes 99492-99494 and HCPS code G2214.
 
  • General BHI Services
    Services include systemic assessment, care plan revisions, and team support.
    Bill with CPT code 99484 and HCPS code G0323 for monthly care integration.
    From Jan 2023, clinical psychologists and social workers can also offer these services.

2. Psychotherapy for Crisis

Essential for crisis management, providing immediate support and counseling.

  • Billing Codes:
    90839 Psychotherapy for Crisis: (First 60 minutes)
    90840 Additional 30 minutes spent with patient

3. Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) Screening & Treatment

Medicare now covers screening and treatment for OUD patients, including medications and services from Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs).

  • Mental health
  • Behavioral health, including substance use disorder (SUD)
  • Psychiatric conditions
